How Much Does an Amboseli Safari Cost? A Budget Guide

Amboseli is famous for one picture: a herd of elephants walking across golden plains with the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro behind them. It is one of the most photogenic parks in Africa, and it is also one of the easier ones to reach from Nairobi. Here is how to think about the cost before you book.

What affects the price

  • Number of nights. Many people book two or three nights, since a single night leaves little time for game drives.
  • Where you stay. Lodges inside the park cost more than camps just outside the gate.
  • How you travel. Road transfers from Nairobi take around four to five hours. Flights land at the park airstrip and cost more.
  • Shared or private vehicle. A private vehicle is more flexible and costs more per person for small groups.
  • Season. Dry-season and holiday dates are the busiest and the most expensive.

What is usually included

A standard package covers park entry, accommodation, meals, a safari vehicle with a driver guide and drinking water. Always confirm it in writing, and check whether airport pick-up, drinks and activities are part of the price.

Best time to visit

The dry months, June to October and January to February, give the best chance of clear mountain views and dependable wildlife concentrations around the swamps. Mornings and late afternoons are best for Kilimanjaro because clouds often build during the day.

What you will see

Amboseli is known for large elephant herds. You will also see zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and many birds, and lion and cheetah on good days. The Maasai communities around the park offer cultural visits worth adding.

Money-saving tips

  1. Travel in a group to split vehicle costs.
  2. Pick shoulder-season dates.
  3. Choose a camp outside the park gate.
  4. Combine Amboseli with Tsavo or Nairobi to make the long drive worthwhile.
