Aberdare National Park: Wildlife Safari and Waterfall Hike

The Aberdare Range rises sharply out of Kenya's central highlands, a world of mist, bamboo forest, moorland and tumbling water. It feels very different from the open plains of the Mara, and that contrast is exactly why it deserves a place on a Kenya itinerary. It is roughly three to four hours from Nairobi, so it fits neatly into a long weekend.

Why visit the Aberdares

The park protects high-altitude forest and moorland, with elephant, buffalo, bushbuck, colobus monkeys and the elusive bongo antelope among its residents. Leopards and rare black rhino live here too. Visitors usually see wildlife from a lodge viewing deck, where animals come to a floodlit waterhole and salt lick after dark.

The waterfalls

The park is famous for its falls. Karuru Falls drops in several stages through a steep gorge and is one of the tallest waterfalls in Kenya. Gura Falls plunges in a single tall column and is another highlight. Viewpoints are reached by walking paths, and some sections are steep, so wear sturdy shoes and go with a ranger or guide.

Hiking and walking

Because the terrain is rugged, walking here is a joy for people who enjoy fresh air and views. Short guided hikes lead to waterfall viewpoints, while longer routes climb through bamboo to open moorland. Remember that this is wild country, and an armed ranger usually accompanies hikes for safety.

Where to stay

Lodge options range from comfortable forest hotels to traditional treetop-style lodges built over waterholes. Some lodges are reached by a transfer into the park, so ask us how the logistics work before you book.

What to pack

  • Warm layers, because nights and mornings are cold at altitude.
  • A waterproof jacket, since mist and rain are common.
  • Sturdy shoes for muddy trails.
  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.

Best time to go

The dry months from January to February and June to October give the clearest views and easier trails. The wetter months are greener, but paths can be slippery and clouds may hide the peaks.
